MAC Venomous Villains

on
Thursday, September 30, 2010
I spent a pretty penny on MAC's Venomous Villains collection today, 'cause everyone knows I'm a sucker for limited edition make-up collections. What drew me in was more the colours and textures, because I actually wasn't that impressed with the packaging; the cartoons look kind of cheap, like they were just stuck on the containers by a 4-year-old. But at least they're not actually stickers, like from Dame Edna, where they start peeling off.

From the Maleficent section, I bought:

  • Beauty Powder in Briar Rose (cool bubblegum pink)
  • Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo in My Dark Magic (shimmery fuchsia violet over a blackened purple base with violet blue over a navy black base)
  • Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo in She Who Cares (medium dark blue shimmer over a navy-black base with dirty green and gold over a blackened forest green base)
  • Lipglass in Revenge is Sweet (sheer jelly medium pink with fuchsia micro-shimmer)
  • Nail Lacquer in Bad Fairy (ruby red, molten lava copper, and gold duochrome)
  • Nail Lacquer in Formidable! (teal, blue, violet, and reddened purple duochrome)
  • Nail Lacquer in Mean & Green (burgundy, green, and rose gold duochrome)

  • From the Evil Queen portion, I picked up:

  • Powder Blush in Bite of an Apple (matte bright coral pink)
  • Eyeshadow in Vainglorious (bronzed burgundy frost)
  • Lipstick in Toxic Tale (satin bright neon coral)
  • Lipglass in Strange Potion (soft pink coral with pink shimmer)
  • Lipglass in Hot House (deep fuchsia berry with iridescent fuchsia shimmer)

  • And from the Cruella de Vil section, I snatched up:

  • Lipstick in Innocence, Beware! (Cremesheen semi-opaque pink nude)
  • Lipstick in Heartless (Amplified opaque bright neutral red)
  • Lipglass in Devilishly Stylish (semi-sheer champagne nude with white shimmer)
  • Lipglass in Wicked Ways (semi-opaque brightened cherry red with subtle golden shimmer)

  • The Dr. Facilier part of this collection held no interest for me at all, though I will admit that the Magically Cool Liquid Powder is ridiculously fun to play around with. Most of the single eyeshadows that were released in this collection can easily be duped by MAC's permanent shades, so I only bought Vainglorious because I love Star Violet and Cranberry, and this shade falls in between both. The must-haves from this collection, for me, are definitely the nail polishes and the lip glosses, but Venomous Villains features a ton of different products with a large variety of shades, textures, and finishes, so there's something for everyone. I actually put all of my product on hold with my friends at MAC so I got everything I wanted, but this collection is going to sell out fast, so I would get to a MAC counter ASAP if you're interested in any of it.

    Mei Nung Beef Noodle House

Had handmade Taiwanese-style noodles with beef from Mei Nung Beef Hoodle House for dinner today. It was awesome except for the smell of the restaurant. Why would anyone willingly order stinky tofu, let alone eat it?

    Friday Five

    This week's Friday Five:
    1. Do people contact you on your cell or house phone more? Definitely my cell phone. Very few people even know my house number, 'cause I rarely ever use it.
    2. Do you call or e-mail your friends/family more? Call, for sure. I do a lot of texting as well, but I actually rarely e-mail my friends. If anything, I'll leave them a message on their Facebook walls, but I don't usually e-mail or instant message them.
    3. Does your cat/dog/bird/baby/stuffed animal have a Livejournal/e-mail/MySpace account? No. Like, really?
    4. What do you think will replace the Internet? Perhaps a technology that will be developed in the next 20 years or so. As for now, I don't think anything can replace the speed, efficiency, and amount of information on the Internet.
    5. How do you feel about VHS's not being made anymore? A little sad, but I still have my old ones. And let's face it, the quality on VHS just plain sucks. I'm a total DVD girl, though - I refuse to make the switch to Blu-ray. For now, at least.

    Cosmetics Shopping Spree #641

    on
    Thursday, September 23, 2010
My most recent make-up hauls (from Murale, Sephora, Holt Renfrew, and Shoppers) include:

Stila Custom Colour Blush: the whole concept of one-shade-fits-all, finally in a powder form. It looks like a super bright, neon pink in the pan, but looks so flattering on the skin.

Nars Eyeshadow Duo in Alhambra (metallic warm rose and golden champagne) and Rajasthan (golden taupe brown and smoky peacock blue), and Single Eyeshadow in Daphne (vibrant royal purple). Rajasthan and Daphne are definitely the highlights from Nars' Fall collection. Beautiful, rich colour with excellent pay-off. Alhambra is still my go-to highlight/base eyeshadow colours and I hit pan on my last one so I grabbed a new one. You'd think that, being such neutral shades, other brands would have dupes of Alhambra, but I have yet to find ones (even from MAC) that are just as flattering. I've already gone through three of these in the last year.

Korres Lip Butter in Plum and Fresh Sugar Plum Lip Balm SPF 15. The easiest ways to wear a plum shade, and both intensely moisturizing. I like the Korres one for more colour pay-off (it almost looks like a stain and is buildable), and the Fresh one for a natural look.

Burberry Lipstick in 09 Blush (a mid-tone pink with a touch of coral with very subtle gold micro-shimmer). This is a very flattering shade across a variety skintones. I was really hesitant in buying this at first, because it's a $35 lipstick and I don't get a discount on it. But I understand the hype - it's mostly opaque colour coverage, has a lovely creamy texture with a slightly glossy look, is fairly moisturizing while still being quite long-wearing, and is comfortable to wear.

Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Across the Universe (a deep navy blue jelly base with electric blue glitter, and teal and green hexagonal glitter) and Bad Romance (a black-burgundy jelly base with regular fuchsia glitter and hexagonal fuchsia glitter). I finally found these at Murale, and bought them immediately. They're just really fun and unique shades (I haven't found any great dupes for either one). It's definitely more work to apply just because you need a minimum of three coats, and it's an even bigger pain in the ass to remove, but it's worth it in the end because the final looks are amazing.

MAC Nail Trend F/W 2010 by Jin Soon Nail Lacquers in Concubine (darkened red with ruby and scarlet shimmer flecks), Rain of Flowers (blackened purple base with flecks of violet shimmer), Ming Blue (brightened medium-dark ocean blue with softer blue shimmer), and Jade Dragon (deep forest green with flecks of green-teal shimmer). I found these to be quite pigmented, even if the formula was on the thinner side. They're not the most unique shades I've seen, but they're still gorgeous shades and beautiful to wear.

Zoya Nail Lacquer in Ivanka (emerald green with a darker forest green base and brighter emerald shimmer as well as gold and green flecks) and Gosh Nail Lacquer in Silky Mint (mid-tone creamy jade green). What can I say? I'm a sucker for green nail polish.

Yes, I'm well aware that I have a make-up buying problem.

    Toy Watch

    on
    Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Bought myself a white Toy Watch a couple of days ago, and it finally arrived! I've loved the style of these watches for a while, but I didn't want to get the over-sized style (similar to the Michael Kors ones) because they're too big. So I'm really glad Toy Watch made a "mini" version (which really isn't that mini, because it's still 33mm). Plus, I haven't been able to wear a watch in ages because I'm allergic to most metals, but this watch is made with "Plasteramic."

    Yep, it's instant love.

Had dinner with my mom at 369 Shanghai Dim Sum that included steamed soup-filled pork dumplings and pan-fried green onion pancakes. I could eat those dumplings every day and not get sick of it. True story.

    5. Where would you most like to travel to next? It's a tie between Cairo and Dubai.
