MAC Shop MAC, Cook MAC: Tendertone Lip Balm SPF 12

MAC released a new two-part collection this past Thursday. One part is called Shop MAC, and the other part is called Cook MAC. Shop MAC includes 17 products, and Cook MAC includes 15 products. Cook MAC sees the release of four re-promoted and limited edition shades of Tendertone Lip Balm SPF 12 (two of which will not be reviewed here). Tendertone Lip Balms are non-sticky, glossy, gel-like lip balms — sort of a lip gloss/balm hybrid. They smell and taste like strawberry-kiwi. They come in clear glass jars with black lids (like Paint Pots), with secondary cardboard packaging in bright pink gingham with the MAC logo in teal. Each Tendertone Lip Balm SPF 12 contains 6 ml of product, and retails for $18.

Hot 'N' Saucy and Hush, Hush

Hot 'N' Saucy is a medium cherry red. It takes on a more watermelon pink tone once applied to bare lips. It is a re-promoted shade from the original Tendertone collection in 2008 (and has since been released a few times), and is limited edition. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has low-medium pigmentation and semi-sheer colour pay-off. It looks like a much sheerer and non-shimmery version of Venetian Lustreglass, or a more sheer and more pink version of Double Dare Cremesheen Glass.

Hush, Hush is a light golden beige with gold shimmer. Once applied to bare lips, there's no discernable colour, but it does add visible gold shimmer and sheen. It is a re-promoted shade from the original Tendertone collection in 2008 (and has since been released a few times), and is limited edition. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has low pigmentation and sheer colour pay-off. It is less shimmery than Moth To Flame Dazzleglass.

Tendertone Lip Balm SPF 12 is one of those products that are really a hit-or-miss. Those who love them really, really love them and will likely be stockpiling from this collection. Those who didn't like them the first couple times they were released will probably skip over them this time. But I do know people who didn't like Tendertones initially but love them now! I personally love this product, which adds the shiny finish and sheer colour of a lip gloss without the stickiness or goopiness of a gloss. I also like that these have that hydrating, emollient texture of a lip balm, so they are very comfortable to wear. These are not my go-to glosses or my go-to lip balms, but are rather excellent to wear on top of lipstick or lip liner. Many people won't like the pot packaging, especially on-the-go, and many people won't like the sweet, fruity scent. But if either of those things don't bother you, these are certainly worth checking out.

  1. Love how the red one looks but I can't stand the smell. It's not a bad smell and I might even have liked it a few years ago, but I'm becoming really particular about scented products and the one I tested bothered me all morning until I rubbed it off. But there's something so great about seeing a glass pot full of red gloss. It's happifying!

    1. Yeah, if you don't like the smell, it's a definite no-go, 'cause these seem even more strongly scented than I remember them. But I totally agree, the red one is my favourite -- definitely happifying. ;)
