MAC Fashion Sets (North America): Lipsticks

on
Monday, May 14, 2012

On May 3, MAC released a collection called Fashion Sets, which features seven colour sets that include a lipstick, lip gloss, and nail polish. To avoid any confusion, each product is sold separately, despite being called "sets." MAC took seven best-selling lip shades by region and made corresponding lipsticks, lip glosses, and nail polishes. Each region (North America, Asia Pacific, Europe and Africa, and Latin America and Middle East) will have their seven region-specific shades available in-stores, but all shades from all regions are available online. This review includes the North American shades only. Fashion Sets features seven lipsticks, two of which are new and limited edition, and five of which are permanent at all locations. Each lipstick comes in regular black packaging, contains 3 grams of product, and retails for $17.50. These shades are applicable for the Back To MAC recycling program at all locations.

Chestnut, Rebel, Girl About Town, Snob, Myth, Spice, and Russian Red

Chestnut is a dark warm chocolate brown with red undertones in a Satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It was inspired by Chestnut Lip Pencil. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is less red than Desire, and slightly more red than Film Noir.

Rebel is a medium-dark brightened berry pink in a Satin finish. It is a permanent shade. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is brighter and much more pink than Odyssey, and darker than Quite The Thing! Sheen Supreme.

Girl About Town is a medium bright cool-toned fuchsia pink in an Amplified finish. It is a permanent shade. It goes on smoothly and evenly, with high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is darker and more opaque than Lickable, and brighter and cooler than Lustering.

Snob is a light cool-toned pink in a Satin finish. It is a permanent shade. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is cooler than Dress It Up Pro Longwear Lipcreme, warmer than Saint Germain, and darker and cooler than Creme Cup.

Myth is a pale beige nude with pink undertones in a Satin finish. It is a permanent shade. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is lighter and less peach than Creme d'Nude, and slightly darker and more pink than Supremely Confident Sheen Supreme.

Spice is a medium rosy brown in a Satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It was inspired by Spice Lip Pencil. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is more pink than Mocha, and warmer and more brown than Fast Play.

Russian Red is a medium bright neutral red in a Matte finish. This is a permanent shade. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is warmer than Ruby Woo, and cooler than Brave Red.

The must-have lipstick from this collection is Spice, which is universally flattering and is one of those perfect colours that will accentuate your lips and give you colour without drawing attention. Chestnut will likely be too dark for fair to medium-dark skintones unless you're going for the vampy look, but I can see it being a great everyday shade for those with dark to deep dark skintones. The other five shades are permanent, so I don't think there's really a rush to get them, but they're absolutely worth looking at — they are, after all, some of the most popular shades in MAC's lipstick range.

  1. They should just make all of them permanent and not string people along so!

I spent way too much of my life with the Spice lip pencil and WILL NOT GO BACK! Rebel looks pretty in lipstick. But again, I'm a wuss. :x

    1. MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.

Oddly, I'm not a huge fan of Spice lip pencil, but I love the lipstick version! And... Rebel was my first "bright" lipstick. :D It looks so dark and scary in the tube and it comes out as a gorgeous vibrant berry! You should try it someday. :)
