MAC Hey, Sailor!: Soft Sand Bronzing Powder

MAC will be releasing their main Summer collection, called Hey, Sailor!, this coming Thursday, May 24, in stores in North America. Hey, Sailor! will be comprised of two parts, one focusing on colour and the other focusing on face and body. Together, this collection will feature a total of 40 products — 30 of which are new and limited edition, five of which are re-promotes, and five of which are permanent. Hey, Sailor! sees the release of two shades of Bronzing Powder, one of which is new and limited edition and one of which is permanent (that will not be reviewed here). Each Bronzing Powder comes in a limited edition navy blue compact with a navy blue and white nautical stripe design, and limited edition box packaging featuring the same design. Each compact contains 10 grams of product, and retails for $29.

Soft Sand

Soft Sand

Soft Sand is a medium warm golden tan with a subtle gold shimmer-sheen. The texture of this powder is soft though slightly stiff, so it has medium pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off but it does take some more effort to go on smoothly and get it to sit evenly. That having been said, this shade is really hard to over-do and it's easily layerable and blendable. It is lighter and has less shimmer than Refined Golden, and less orange than Give Me Sun! Mineralize Skinfinish.

In terms of texture, I have seen better from MAC — just smoother and more finely-milled — but the colour is really great for those with fair to medium skintones that want to add a sunkissed glow without going really dark or orange. It is a shade that is really needed in MAC's permanent range, actually, because Refined Golden is currently the only bronzer with yellow undertones (Golden is on the peachy side and barely shows up unless you're fair, Bronze is much darker with red undertones, and Give Me Sun! is gives an orangey cast). This shade is really quite excellent for a more natural-looking tan.

  1. I had to take a walk through the Eaton Centre during lunch today and saw these (some of the items were already sold out? I saw empty slots in the display). The packaging is killer but none of it excites me. I don't know if it's because I'm in a slump but none of them really seems standout.

    1. Yeah, a ton of it is already sold out and it's only the first day, even online! You know the hype that surrounds MAC collections, though...

I guess it depends on what you're interested in, right? I mean, this collection as a whole isn't SUPER EXCITING to me like To The Beach was (which was one of the best MAC summer collections to date, IMO), but I do still find some of the products to perform really well, and there are some nice shades that I would use regularly. :) But, no, there isn't anything that really stands out to me, either. Like, if you're looking for a bronzer, there are some nice options. If you're looking for a nice blush, there's options. But maybe you're not looking for anything! ;)
