Kenzo Japanese Noodle House

Friday dinner date with Edward at Kenzo Japanese Noodle House:

Takoyaki

We decided to get an order of takoyaki to start because I always have to order it if it's on the menu. I actually think these are some of the better ones I've had in this city, extra plump and served piping hot, with a lot of octopus on the inside and not too much batter on the outside. The perfect amount of takoyaki sauce and mayo, too. And the portion is excellent for the price, at $5 for six pieces. It's pretty filling, but ignore the other appetizers and side dishes; this is the must-order when dining here.

Tonkotsu Ramen

Noodle-y goodness

For my ramen, I decided on the original Hakata-style Tonkotsu option. It has a milky, smooth, pork bone-based broth that is flavourful without being overpowering, and is one of the best options for those who like their ramen on the mild side, in my opinion. It's not as rich as the broth found at Kinton (which is actually downright fattening, but they have good pork belly) or Santouka (still the best broth in the city, in my opinion), but I would rate it higher than Niwatei and Ajisen (Sansotei, I will try you one day, I promise!). The noodle itself is good, firm, and springy with a good chew; not unlike some of the better ramen places in the city. Definitely one of the best ramen options outside of the downtown core. If you do decide to eat here, though, let it be noted that it is located in an extremely unassuming plaza strip with a very tiny parking area (maybe nine or ten spaces, max), so I don't advise going during prime dining hours (we went after 8:30pm), and I also suggest looking up the exact location first so you don't miss it.

    2. Jenn, there's actually a few locations of Kenzo, and three of them are downtown! :) Plus, there are SO MANY MORE ramen restaurants down there. Santouka, Sansotei, Kinton? You have the BIG THREE!
