Pick-Ups & Deliveries: November 2014 — Sephora VIB Sale

on
Wednesday, November 26, 2014
Welp, we knew this was gonna happen. I don't think anyone was under any illusions of how much I could spend. After two online orders and three separate trips to Sephora, here's my total haul from the VIB sale:

NARS Audacious Lipstick in Raquel, Anna, Charlotte, Bette, and Liv

Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Syrah, Madeira, Honey Berry, Rhubarb, and Violet

Bite Beauty Matte Crème Lip Crayon in Léché, Amaretto, and Tatin

Okay, firstly, it's clear that my lipstick game is still going strong. My obsession with the NARS Audacious Lipsticks pushed me to get five more shades. I also found a healthy new addiction to Bite Beauty, which prompted the question, "Why haven't I bought any of these before?" I swatched the High Pigment Pencils in store and was immediately smitten, and therefore had to buy five shades (online, of course, since the display I saw in-store was almost completely empty and had not a single shade left that I wanted). I also picked up three shades of the Matte Crème Lip Crayon, 'cause I love mattes, and you know, when in Rome.

Ardency Inn Modster Manuka Honey Enriched Pigments in Sunday, Rose Gold, Copper, Orchid, and Disco

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Skinny Brow Pencil in Soft Brown and Taupe

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard and Ginger

I surprisingly wasn't tempted by that many eyeshadows this time around even with all the holiday palettes out, but I was determined to get my hands on the Ardency Inn Manuka Honey Enriched Pigments. It was the shade Royal (a stunning deep vibrant royal purple) that got me really interested in them, and I actually didn't manage to get my hands on it (because it's sold out everywhere), but made up for it by getting five other shades. I also finally gave in and bought two really hyped-up-but-worth-the-hype products: the Anastasia Brow Wiz (in two shades, Taupe and Soft Brown, 'cause I'm really into ombre eyebrows right now), and the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (again in two shades, one for evening out redness and one for brightening under eye).

Bobbi Brown Highlight Powder in Bronze Glow

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Moonstone

Urban Decay Naked Illuminated Shimmering Powder in Luminous

And then highlighters. I have way too many highlighters as it is, but it's a sickness, you know? The first one that tempted me was the new Bobbi Brown Highlight Powder in Bronze Glow that's new for this holiday season. This also marks the first Bobbi Brown product I own. I've found it difficult to find a bronzy highlighter that isn't too dark on my skintone, and this one fits the bill perfectly. Plus, it's in gorgeous limited edition packaging, and y'all know I am a sucker for packaging. The second one was the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone. I probably didn't need this one (like, at all, since I have MAC Whisper of Gilt and Too Faced Candlelight Glow, both of which are pretty much exact dupes of this), but I am obsessed with the texture of the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors. Plus, I have Opal, Rose Gold, and Gold Champagne, and I had to complete my Becca highlighting collection, you know? Finally, I got the other Urban Decay Naked Illuminated Shimmering Powder (I bought the other shade, Aura, last month) because these highlighters are more sparkly and iridescent than metallic or frosty, and I felt like it was different enough from my other highlighting powders to merit buying.

Clarisonic Mia 2 Winter Hydration Kit: Clarisonic Mia 2 in Sea Breeze, GlamGlow ThirstyMud Hydrating Treatment (15 g), Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel (150 ml), and First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream (56.7 g)

Boscia Blotting Linens in Clear Complexion and Black Charcoal, Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask, and Philosophy Purity Made Simple Foaming Cleansing Gel

I finally broke down and bought a Clarisonic. Yep, after nearly two years of fighting the hype, I decided to get one. I don't know why I suddenly felt the need to get one after all this time, but getting a discount certainly helped. And also the fact that Sephora was offering it in a gorgeous aquamarine colour (again, I'm a sucker for packaging), and in a really good value set that included a full-size bottle of Boscia's Purifying Gel Cleanser, a full-size tube of First Aid Beauty's Ultra Repair Cream (something I was actually going to buy, anyway, because it's supposed to be fantastic for rashes and eczema-prone skin), and a deluxe sample tube of GlamGlow's ThirstyMud for $5 more than the Mia 2 alone. I also stocked up on my favourite Boscia Blotting Linens, a tube of Philosophy's Purity Made Simple Foaming Cleansing Gel (my holy grail make-up removing cleanser), and a tube of Origins Clear Improvement Mask (which I actually got because I couldn't bring myself to spend $76 on the GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment, and the guy at Sephora told me this was the closest thing to it for a much more affordable price).

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish and Prêt-à-Powder

Fresh Sugar Lychee Eau de Parfum

Lastly, I got a new bottle of my favourite Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish, a bottle of Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-Powder dry shampoo because I'm really into volume right now (my hair is actually really long now, and thusly much heavier, so I like adding more volume to my roots), and, of course, a bottle of my tried-and-true signature fragrance, Fresh Sugar Lychee. And since I spent way too much money at Sephora, I also got a few of the 500-point perks (I loved the Bliss one so much, I decided to get two of them).

Sephora VIB Rouge Birthday Bonus: Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara, Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in 0L, and Rouge Artist Natural Lipstick in N9

Sephora VIB 500 Point Perk: Urban Decay Urban Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette and 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero

Sephora VIB 500 Point Perk (x 2): Bliss Spa Lemon + Sage Body Butter, High Intensity Hand Cream, Fabulous Foaming Face Wash, and That's Incredi-'peel'! Resurfacing Pads

Yes, I am going to chalk this entire haul as birthday presents to myself...

What did you guys get from Sephora's VIB sale?

Makeup and Beauty Blog: Monday Poll, Vol. 348

on
Monday, November 24, 2014
This week's Monday Poll:
  1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Bun, unless I have shorter hair, in which case, ponytail.

  2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on. Went on a date with a guy that I met online, and even though I told him I don't drink alcohol, he took me to a bar, where I ordered a Diet Coke and he ordered a beer and spent the next 45 minutes talking about himself. Because it was too late to go to do much else, he suggested that we could watch a movie at his apartment. I was young and stupid, so I agreed, not realizing the implication. I figured he'd have a selection of DVDs to choose from, but he ended up putting on Misery on YouTube. On YouTube. (Sure knew how to show a girl a good time, no? And also, Misery? Really? On a first date? Red flag, red flag, red flag.) And then he thought I was one of those girls, so he tried to kiss me and feel me up and I asked, "Um... what are you doing?" because I was getting the creepy crawlies and also because I was not remotely attracted to him. So he stopped and I was getting ready to leave, but not before he criticized my jacket and my shoes, and then asked, "So, was the date successful? Do you wanna go out again?" And because I did not know how to reject people, I said, "Uh... maybe.... we'll see." I immediately got out of there (like, I might have ran), and chalked it up to "worst date ever, and also creepy." Then he proceeded to call me twice that week. When I didn't answer both times, he left a heinous message on my voice mail that included calling me a "see-you-next-Tuesday." Needless to say, I never saw him again.

  3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Yeah, sure, why not? I usually end up blending a matte in the outer corner to add more dimension and depth (I have a crease, but it's quite shallow, and matte shadows make it appear deeper), but I'm always game to use shimmer/metallics/frosts in my crease.

  4. Cool-toned or warm-toned? My skintone is warm (I'm an NC30/35 in MAC), but I wear both cool- and warm-toned eyeshadows/blushes/lipsticks.

  5. A place you'd like to visit again and why? Tokyo, Japan. I went there when I was 16 and thought it was amazing, but I think I'd appreciate the culture so much more as an adult.

The Makeup Addict Tag

on
Thursday, November 20, 2014
Because I was tagged by the ever-lovely Larie. As if I needed a tag to tell you I had a makeup hoarding problem...

1. Which product do you still keep buying more of despite having plenty in your collection? Er, everything? Is that too vague an answer? If I have to pick one single type of product, then lipstick. Though blush and eyeshadow are really close seconds...

2. What's the one product you can't live without? Again, if I have to pick one, it'd probably be mascara. But I have four types of products that I deem essential for everyday: black liquid eyeliner (my favourites are Lancôme's Artliner in Noir and MAC's Boot Black Liquid Eye Liner), eyebrow pencil (my staple is MAC's Eyebrows in Lingering), mascara (my holy grail one right now is Urban Decay's Perversion Mascara), and powder foundation (my staple is MAC's Studio Fix Powder in NC35).

Lancôme's Artliner in Noir, MAC Boot Black Liquid Eye Liner, MAC Eyebrows in Lingering, Urban Decay Perversion Mascara, and Studio Fix Powder Foundation

3. Favourite makeup brand? Can anyone pick just one? I'd probably find it easier to pick a favourite child (you know, if I had children). I shall break it down by favourite brands for types of makeup. For foundation and concealer, I would say MAC just for variety and versatility. For blushes, I would say MAC (for their Powder Blush, Mineralize Blush, and Extra Dimension Blush formulas; they just make the most variety of colours and finishes), Becca (for their Mineral Blush), Makeup Geek, and NARS. For eyeshadows, I would say MAC (again, for their variety), Makeup Geek, and Urban Decay. For lipsticks, MAC (again, for the variety), NARS (the Audacious formula), Urban Decay, and Tom Ford. And for gloss, MAC (for the Cremesheen Glass formula).

Urban Decay Electric Pigment Palette, Vice 2 Palette, and custom palettes

MAC Lipsticks

NARS Audacious Lipsticks, Tom Ford Lip Colors, and Urban Decay Revolution Lipsticks

4. How big is your makeup collection? Erm... fairly big... Let's not get into exact numbers (because I am too lazy to count them all).

5. And how do you store it? The Hopen 8-drawer dresser (in my bedroom) and the Lillången high cabinet (in my bathroom) from Ikea. I use smaller trays and boxes within them to organize.

Ikea Hopen 8-drawer dresser

6. How many items of makeup have you got in your handbag at the moment? Surprisingly, not a lot! I've been using a smaller handbag, so I've cut out a lot of beauty products. I usually only have a pack of Boscia Blotting Linens (not really makeup, but a beauty item) and the lip product(s) I've decided to wear for the day (right now, I have two lipsticks: Chanel's Rouge Coco Shine in 89 Satisfaction and MAC Viva Glam II).

MAC Viva Glam II Lipstick, Chanel 89 Satisfaction Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick, and Boscia Black Charcoal Blotting Linens

7. If you could raid another blogger's stash, who would it be? Probably Christine of Temptalia. Her storage system is insanity.

8. How long does your usual makeup routine take and how many products do you use? If we're talking the most basic of my makeup routines, then about 15 minutes. If I'm doing more complicated looks, then maybe 30 to 40 minutes. But no matter what look I'm doing, I use at least 11 products (primer, foundation, concealer, blot powder, eye primer, liquid eye liner, mascara, eyebrow pencil, bronzer, blush, highlighter, lipstick). I'm high-maintenance like that.

9. Have you ever bought makeup knowing you wouldn't use it? Not intentionally.

10. Tag a few other makeup addicts to do this tag! I don't usually like tagging individuals, but... Liz of Beauty Reductionista.

Instagram: Birthday Dinner Edition — Touro Steakhouse, Il Postino, Red Lobster

on
Monday, November 17, 2014
Remember how I said my birthday could be summed up as delicious? Aside from Momofuku Shōtō, I was also treated to not one, not two, but three other dinners. Yes, I am indeed a lucky, lucky girl. Food as a birthday present is always a win in my books. I didn't have my actual camera with me on those nights, but I did capture all of it with my phone, so I thought I'd share some snapshots here (if you follow me on Instagram, you may have already seen these, so I apologize in advance). It started on Wednesday night, when my girls Vivian, Amanda, and Thax took me out for all-you-can-eat meat (!!!) at Touro Steakhouse:

Cheese popovers, yucca fries, and deep-fried plantains

Pork sausage, chicken wings, beef ribs, and garlic steak

Grilled cinnamon pineapple, picanha, flank steak, parmesan sirloin, and leg of lamb

A little birthday cupcake

And then on Thursday, my friend Stephanie took me out for dinner at Il Postino:

Crostini with cherry tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella

Antipasto platter: salami, prosciutto, cheese, crostini, and olives

Linguine with calamari, scallops, mussels, tiger shrimp, and sweet tomatoes

Garganelli with prosciutto, spinach, cherry tomatoes, and buffalo mozzarella in rosé sauce

And then my friend Austin took me out for dinner at Red Lobster on Friday night:

Neverending basket of the most delicious cheddar biscuits

Ultimate Feast: Maritime lobster tail, garlic shrimp, Walt’s Favourite shrimp, and coconut shrimp

Best. Birthday. Ever.

Birthday Dinner: Momofuku Shōtō

on
Sunday, November 16, 2014
My 28th birthday could only be described in one word: delicious. My friends Ronsee and Cynthia took me out to Momofuku Shōtō last night for two-and-a-half hours and ten courses of culinary delights. Their tasting menu changes every day based on market availability, and guests are seated along a huge counter that surrounds an open kitchen. Here, last night's offerings:

Oyster with homemade sriracha and fresh baked bread

Root vegetable soup with chicken sausage

Pork fat grilled rice with nori

Fluke sashimi with pickled cherry bomb pepper, myoga, and black bean

Mackerel tataki with red onion jelly, black rice, and fresh yuzu

Fish balls, fresh uni, and crispy onion in mussel-infused kale broth

Cauliflower salad with black truffle, egg yolk, and black walnut

Buckwheat fettuccine with white truffle and smoked albacore tuna shavings

Seared scallop with matsutake mushrooms, sunchoke, pineapple, and razor clam chowder

Poached pear, Riesling gelée, and cashew brittle with shaved foie gras

Slow smoked beef cheek with fresh sour cream and baby Brussels sprouts

Cranberry sorbet with roasted pumpkin, hozon, and spiced milk

Danish æbleskiver with toasted oat ice cream, crabapples, and granola

Flavours and textures were well-thought-out, and dishes were beautifully executed. Even the bread at the beginning of the meal was gorgeous. Highlights include the fish balls and uni in kale broth, the cauliflower salad, and the beef cheek. The only dish that was somewhat of a flop for me was the pear and cashew brittle with foie gras shavings. I actually think the foie gras overwhelmed and confused the rest of the flavours of the dish. (Also, I'm not a huge foie gras fan.) But I had a truly fantastic time at Momofuku Shōtō, and despite it being expensive, it is also inventive, leisurely, and ridiculously delicious, and is really a one-of-a-kind experience in Toronto. There are no servers, really, as the chefs present the dishes directly to you, but there are a couple of very nice, well-informed hipsters (complete with glasses and beards) that walk around to guide you through the drink lists, answer questions about your food and/or the restaurant (and the Momofuku empire as a whole), clear the counter after every course, and re-fill your water (no goddamn water fee here). The restaurant as a whole borders casual and carefree with pretentiousness... but it works. I had an amazing time, and I whole-heartedly recommend coming here for a special occasion. One of the best dining experiences I've ever had in this city. Really.
