Last Thursday, MAC released their anniversary collection for Eyes on MAC, which is their annual eyeshadow palette extension launch. This year's Eyes on MAC collection features a total of ten eye products: two 15-pan eyeshadow palettes, six nine-pan eyeshadow palettes, and two eye brushes. Of the ten products, there are two new and limited edition nine-pan eyeshadow palettes. The Red-Hot Times Nine Palette is described as "a well-edited palette of red-toned hues offering countless colour combinations. Textures range from matte to satin to veluxe pearl. The saturated soft and smooth shades are packaged in one pocket-sized compact for easy portability." It is housed in a regular black rectangular clear-lidded compact with the MAC logo on the lid. Each Eyeshadow x 9 Palette contains a total of 7.2 grams of product, and retails for $42.

Vanilla, For Your Pleasure, and Get Closer

Vanilla is a light warm creamy beige in a Velvet finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is less peach than Orb, less yellow than Brule, and more muted than Blanc Type.
For Your Pleasure is a medium warm muted dusty pink in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more brown and more matte than Girlie, lighter and more pink than Haux, and darker and warmer than Malt.
Get Closer is a medium warm yellow-toned tangerine in a Satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more yellow than Rule, slightly brighter and more matte than Up at Dawn, and more yellow and more matte than Suspiciously Sweet.

Carnal Charm, Bijou, and Fuchsia Fury

Carnal Charm is a medium-dark warm vibrant persimmon red in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more red than Red Brick, darker and more red than Rule, and slightly more orange than News Flash!.
Bijou is a medium-dark cool brightened passion pink in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is cooler and less red than Passionate, more muted than Bright Pink, and brighter and more matte than Cherry Topped.
Fuchsia Fury is a medium-dark cool vibrant pinked red in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. Frock Talk, Shadowy Lady, and Lover in Me

Frock Talk is a medium-deep warm browned plum with a pearly sheen in a Veluxe Pearl finish. This is a re-promoted shade from last year's Fashion Pack collection. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker and more plum than Cranberry, darker than Star Violet, and more plum than Oh My Mocha!.
Shadowy Lady is a deep-dark blackened plum in a Matte finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker and cooler than Sketch, more plum and more matte than Smut, and cooler and more matte than Beauty Marked.
Lover in Me is a dark cool indigo-purple in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a slightly drier, dustier texture, and can go on patchy and unevenly. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque buildable colour pay-off. Due to the texture, it can be difficult to layer and blend out. It is cooler and more blue than Shadowy Lady, more purple and more matte than Contrast, and cooler than Indian Ink.

It's about time that MAC finally came out with a red-toned eyeshadow palette. I think with the incredible popularity of red eyeshadows recently (e.g. Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance, Violet Voss Holy Grail, Morphe 35O, etc.), MAC knew they had to step it up. What I appreciate about this particular palette, though, is that MAC didn't make it into a neutral palette with a couple of reddened shades in it — there are dozens of palettes like that out there already. This is a palette for those who like their bright sunset colours of pinks, oranges, and reds. But it is surprisingly well-rounded to create some gorgeous dimensional looks: Vanilla is a great universal highlight colour, both For Your Pleasure and Get Closer work as amazing transition shades for warm-toned looks, and Frock Talk and Shadowy Lady are great for smoking out these bright tones without resorting to using black. Every shade is soft, smooth, and beautifully pigmented (again, I have to note that MAC really improved their matte shadow game), with Lover in Me being the only "dud" in the palette (it's drier than the other mattes, so it's harder to blend out). That having been said, it's disappointing that this palette is limited edition, and more so knowing that MAC can make gorgeous bright reddened eyeshadows (that are actually eyeshadows, unlike their small powder blushes that sit in their eyeshadow displayers but are not technically eye safe) but have just chosen not to add it to the permanent line-up. This palette won't be for everybody, but for those who love their bright sunset shades, it's definitely worth checking out.
