Today, MAC launched their first collaboration product for this year's Future Forward series. Future Forward is a series of limited edition collaborations with "a visionary group of women shaping music's future." The first of this year's collaborations is with Brooklyn native and violet-haired R&B singer, Justine Skye, who "woos online audiences with her velvety voice and unstoppable presence. Her easy glamour and confident eclecticism come together in a bright purple-pink Iridescent Powder for those ready for as much colour and charisma as Skye herself." Iridescent Powder is a re-promoted and limited edition formula that is described simply as "an iridescent pressed powder providing a shimmering sheen." They are housed in regular black round mirrored compacts with the MAC logo on the lid, with "special carton packaging [that] features a purple glitter design with holographic silver accents and Justine Skye’s logo." Each Iridescent Powder contains a total of 8 grams of product, and retails for $32. It is available online and in select MAC Store locations across North America.

Justine Indira Skyers, also known as Justine Skye, is a 21-year-old American singer, songwriter, and model. "Justine got her start at a professional singing career when she performed songs to go with the book, Rules To Rock By. She is known for her cover of "Headlines" by Drake, which received 2 million views on YouTube. Her debut EP, Everyday Living, helped her gain notoriety and she signed a deal in 2013 with Atlantic Records, under which she released the album, Emotionally Unavailable. During that time she released the song, "Collide," featuring the rapper Tyga. In 2016, she left Atlantic and signed to Roc Nation and Republic Records. In December 2016, she released her new EP, 8 Ounces.

Justine Skye is a medium warm muted violet with a pink pearlized sheen in a iridescent frost finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a lightweight, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque to opaque buildable colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. There is nothing similar to this in MAC's permanent range.
I actually had never heard of Justine Skye before this launch, but that's the whole point of MAC's Future Forward collaborations — to spotlight up-and-coming female artists and beauty trendsetters in the music industry. MAC and Justine Skye did a fantastic job in creating a truly unique cheek product, as there's nothing quite like it in the cosmetics market right now. Of course, purple cheek powders aren't new, but most of them are lighter or veering towards lavender as highlighters, or darker and more pink as blushes — this one sits very comfortably in between. Upon first glance, it seems like a shade that won't be flattering or is difficult to use, but I've tested it out on several different skintones and it's surprisingly wearable. On fair to medium-dark skintones, this works beautifully as a soft iridescent violet blush. (Those with fairer skintones will want to use a light hand as it can end up looking muddy when applied heavily.) On medium-deep to deep-dark skintones, this works as a gorgeous highlighter or blush topper. (And of course, it can be used as a lovely shimmery eyeshadow as well.) It can pull more pink or more purple depending on undertone, but it looks stunning on warm and cool complexions alike. This shade isn't going to be for everyone, and it's not meant to be. But true to Skye's nickname, "Purple Unicorn," it's pretty, one-of-a-kind, and a little wild. I only wish that the compact looked as magical as the carton packaging.
