Friday Five: Nonstrosity

This week's Friday Five:
  1. What's a good movie for October that has nothing to do with monsters or Halloween? Drive. It's haunting, moody, mysterious, and dark without having anything to do with monsters or Halloween. This movie was also released in the fall, so it always reminds me of this time of year. For the same reasons, I'd also recommend American Beauty.

  2. What's a good couple of songs for October that have nothing to do with monsters or Halloween?

For a melancholic mood, Thursday's "Autumn Leaves Revisited":

For contemplative, emo feels, Brand New's "Jesus Christ":

For a kinda creepy, dark wave mood, Crosses' "Bitches Brew":

For a mellow, wistful mood, Civil Twilight's "Letters From the Sky":

For something grungier, The White Stripes' "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground":

For a haunting electro vibe, Kavinsky's "Nightcall":

  3. What are some reasons to love October? Cooler weather, leaves changing colour, fall jackets, cute boots, holiday makeup collections, fall nail colours, Thanksgiving long weekend, cinnamon in my coffee (for some reason, it doesn't feel right to put cinnamon in my coffee until October), pumpkin spice doughnuts and muffins, Roots sweatpants (just bought a pair of these Boyfriend sweatpants and they are the most comfortable pants, ever), fall scents at Bath & Body Works, less insects, Halloween candy on sale...

  4. Radio stations sometimes call this month Rocktober, doing special playlists or giveaways in celebration of rock music. What would be a better rhyming name for this month, and how might it be celebrated? Mocktober, a month for all the roasts!

  5. What would be a good holiday to establish in October for those U.S. states not commemorating Columbus Day? Well, us Canadians actually have Thanksgiving in October, but since Americans get Thanksgiving as well, I'd say Friends & Family Day. Just a paid day off to spend with, you know, friends and/or family. (We actually have Family Day here in Ontario as the statutory holiday in February, and it's delightful.)

  1. Three votes for Mocktober. I think we're on to something.

I only know one of your suggested songs, the White Stripes song, of course. Someone else in my stream keeps mentioning Thursday. I'll check out your songs when this ballgame is over. :)

    1. Thursday's one of my favourite bands - the title of my blog is actually named after one of their songs! That having been said, they're a post-hardcore band so their sound can be a little too scream-y and aggressive for many, lol. Still, the song I posted by them is one of their more mellow songs so it can ease you into their sound. ;)

Hope you find something you like to add to your music rotation!
